People are Spending More Money Than Ever on Their Outdoor Spaces

Would you believe that 67% homeowners who spent money to update and beautify their outdoor space ended up spending a significant amount of time outside? Needless to say, people are not only willing to spend money on their outdoor spaces, they’re eager to.

The Importance of Outdoor Living Spaces

A 2014 survey, conducted by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), found that outdoor living spaces have become the most popular “special function room” among homeowners. The survey also discovered that nearly 70-percent of homeowners increased their outdoor living options (patios and decks, outdoor kitchens, seating areas, etc.) — an increase of six-percent from the previous year.

Outdoor Living Spaces are an Extension of the Home

In 2018, Houzz surveyed more than 750 U.S. homeowners who were in the middle of planning or recently completed an outdoor project from February to March of that year. Their survey found that:

  • 38 percent of consumers added fire pits.
  • 35 percent added lights for extended use and ambiance.
  • 27 percent of consumers said their usable outdoor area is significantly larger than their home.
  • 56 percent said they spent more than $10,000 on their outdoor living space.
  • 51 percent of respondents said they now spend, or are planning to spend, more time entertaining outside.

How COVID-19 Affected the Outdoor Living Industry

The COVID-19 pandemic affected nearly every aspect of our life. Because many states implemented stay-at-home-orders that spanned months, people spent more time than ever in their backyards. And with outdoor spaces becoming most people’s sanctuary throughout lockdown, they’re spending more money than ever to ensure their backyard is absolutely perfect.

While so many other industries and businesses struggled to survive this past year, our brands have thrived.

Conserva Irrigation, for example, saw a 40 percent increase in year-over-year sales as of June 2020. In an article for Landscape Management, Russ Jundt, the founder of Conserva Irrigation, said that “...we’ve needed to pivot and be more thoughtful and more prepared, with all the different CDC protocols, our sales for Q1 were up 65 percent year over year and it’s not slowing....”

Vanesa Ellis, the owner of a Conserva Irrigation territory of Northeast Florida, exceeded her top-line revenue goal in 2020. She also saw a 278% increase in year-over-year sales, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

“No matter the circumstance, home owners are still going to need help maintaining their properties, and that’s what has always attracted me to outdoor service,” said Vanesa.
