Years ago, porches usually consisted of nothing more than a few chairs and a table. But today, homeowners want their outdoor space to be an extension of their home — a place where they can relax with friends and family and escape from everyday life.
Now, more than ever, homeowners are not just willing to spend money on luxurious outdoor upgrades; they’re eager to.
Homeowners are Expanding Their Outdoor Living Space
According to the 2019 U.S. Landscaping Trends Survey, homeowners spent an average of $5,000 in 2018 on outdoor renovations. And experts believe that number is only going to grow over the next few years.
With summer finally here, many homeowners are excited to open their pool and safely host friends and family in the comfort of their backyard. And while functionality will always be a priority, design is still the driving factor behind most redesigns and updates.
According to the Landscaping Trends Survey, more than one-third of those who renovated their outdoor space said they wanted to address an outdated or undesirable style, and one-fourth of homeowners said they wanted to update old or outdated finishes.
Lighting Remains a Priority
According to the 2019 U.S. Houzz & Home study, 1 in 5 homeowners made updates to their outdoor lighting systems, whether because they wished for more aesthetically pleasing lighting or because they wanted to improve their home security.
And according to the same survey, irrigation was the second most popular outdoor system upgraded by renovating homeowners in 2018.
The Need for Professionals is Growing
When it comes to upgrading their outdoor space, many homeowners understand that this is not something you can DIY. Of those surveyed, nearly 90 percent of renovating homeowners hired at least one professional. Of that 90 percent, roughly one-third of homeowners worked with a gardener or lawn-care specialist — the most commonly hired professionals.
